Chinese Taipei’s Chuan Chih-Yuan was the one casualty in the Men’s Singles event at the Asian Cup in Sapporo on Saturday 29th March 2008.
Seeded four, he lost in the initial stage to Singapore’s Yang Zi, finished in second place in his group and thus qualified for the quarter-finals where he suffered his second defeat of the day.
He was beaten in six games by top seed Ma Long, a young man who at the Salwa Cup Kuwait Open had surrendered his title to Vladimir Samsonov, in Sapporo, he demonstrated that he was intent of adding to his golden collection.
Seeds Progress
Success for Ma Long and there was also success for the second and third seeded players.
China’s Chen Qi and Singapore’s Gao Ning both emerged unscathed in the initial group section before recording last eight wins.
One Upset
In the group stage Chen Qi defeated Japan’s Kaii Yoshida, Chinese Taipei’s Chiang Peng-Lung and Iran’s Afshin Norouzi whilst Gao Ning accounted for Japan’s Kan Yo and India’s Shatath Kamal Achanta.
The one upset in the two groups being the defeat of Chiang Peng-Lung against the lower world ranked Kaii Yoshida.
End of Progress
Japan’s Kaii Yoshida and Kan Yo both progressed to the round of the last eight, finishing in second place in their respective groups but that was where progress ended.
Kaii Yoshida lost to Gao Ning whilst Kan Yo was beaten by Chen Qi.
Successfully Through
Meanwhile in Group `A’, Ma Long finished in top spot ahead of Japan’s Jun Mizutani, Korea’s Yoon Jae Young and Hong Kong’s Tse Ka Chun, whilst in Group `D’, the two players to miss out were Hong Kong’s Jiang Tianyi and Korea’s JunYoung Sik.
Both lost to Yang Zi and Chuan Chih-Yuan.
Semi-Finals
In the quarter-finals Jun Mizutani defeated Yang Zi in five games to complete the semi-final line up where Ma Long plays Gao Ning and Jun Mizutani confronts Chen Qi.
