SILIGURI: A. Sharath Kamal extended his reign on top by another season. He defeated Sourav Chakraborty to retain the men’s singles title on the concluding day of the National table tennis championship here on Saturday.
Sharath Kamal was joined by Poulomi Ghatak in a rare feat as the two featured in deciding all the five titles for PSPB, which were on offer on the final day. Poulomi lifted her fifth singles title beating Anindita Chakraborty of Railways in the final.
Poulomi also won the women’s doubles crown pairing with childhood friend Mouma Das. On the other hand, Sharath Kamal also won the men’s doubles crown partnering Subhajit Saha before teaming up with Poulomi to win the mixed doubles title.
The two had played prominent roles in the ensuring the crowns for respective Petroleum sides in the team events. This put the tally to an incredible four titles for each of them, who also received Rs. 1,40,000 and Rs. 90,000 respectively for the singles titles.
The men’s event was more about challenging the might of the Chennai-based Kamal, who had come with a special leave from his club San Sebastian, Spain. “It is right that I had an easy tournament but I am quite happy winning four titles,” said Kamal, who leaves for Madrid on Monday.
In the women’s final, Poulomi Ghatak displayed a brilliant attacking game that gave little scope to her opponent Anindita Chakraborty. The match was all about Poulomi’s rasping forehand winners.
Anindita, who had swept aside the challenge of Maharashtra’s Divya Deshpande in the semifinals, was expected to put up a fight. But Poulomi, who saw off second seeded Neha Aggarwal with a brilliant comeback erasing a deficit of two games in the semifinals, was in no mood to relent.
