SILIGURI: Anindita Chakraborty led an ensemble of Railways’ players in dealing a decisive blow on the established might of PSPB in the quarterfinals of the 69th National table tennis championship on Friday.
She took out defending women’s champion Mouma Das in quarterfinals before the high ranked Subhajit Saha and Soumyadeep Roy went out against Sourav Chakraborty and unseeded Sayan Paul Roy respectively in the men’s event.
Fourth seeded A. Amal Raj never allowed Aman Balgu of Maharashtra to settle down and won his match easily to become the third Railways player to reach the semifinals.
The defending men’s champion, Achanta Sharath Kamal, who easily beat Sanil Shetty, remained the sole flag-bearer for PSPB in the last four.
Tactical game
Professedly a reluctant participant in the tournament, being at the fag end of her career, Anindita played a tactical game and that clinched the issue.
Mouma, who won only one game, virtually played into the traps set by Anindita, who primarily employed a defensive game aimed at breaking the rhythm of her opponent.
“I played my natural game and my opponent seemed to choke under of her own expectations,” said Anindita, while adding that she had already done her return tickets hardly expecting to win!
The women’s semifinals would see a clash of generations with the 29-year-old Anindita, a two-time National finalist (1994 and 1995) taking on the 17-year-old Divya Deshpande of Maharashtra.
Divya saw to the end of another Petroleum player, fourth seeded Mantu Ghosh, with a fine blend of control and aggression.
Continuing the trend of upsets, Poulami Ghatak beat her PSPB colleague K. Shamini while second seeded Neha Aggarwal (Petroleum) was the only higher seed remaining in the women’s semifinals.
