The 70th National Table Tennis Championship, held in Patna. Achanta Sharath Kamal bagged the Men’s title 3rd time in a row and Kumaresan Shamini triumphed in her maiden appearance in final. Petroleum Sports promotion Board retains the men’s and women’s team title for the seventh successive time.
Sharath dominated the top half of the draw and in the bottom half unseeded Pathik Metha rose to the occasion to appear in his maiden finals. On the run to finals Pathik Metha beat second-seeded Subhajit Saha in the quarter finals and third-seeded Anthony Amal Raj in semi finals. “Playing a variety of shots and staying focused under pressure are the extra things that I have learnt there” said Pathik Metha who plays for the Spanish First Division club, Tramuntana Figuera.
Job of knocking out seeded players in women’s section was taken by Divya Deshpande and Aslesha Bodas. Divya Deshpande defeated defending champion Poulami Ghatak in the quarter finals. Aslesha Bodas of Maharashtra defeated title aspirant Neha Agarwal 4-1 in pre-quarter finals.
In men’s doubles R.S.Raja & G.Sathiyan of Tamil Nadu lost to Subhajit Saha & Amal Raj of PSPB in finals.
